The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a landmark multi-billion-pound railway infrastructure project aimed at significantly improving connectivity across the North of England. Stretching between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York, the TRU is designed to deliver faster, more reliable, and sustainable rail services. It represents one of the most ambitious rail modernisation efforts in the UK, involving extensive electrification, track upgrades, and station enhancements. BCM GRC Ltd. played a key role in supporting the TRU programme by supplying 3,000 lineal metres of its Network Rail-approved elevated cable troughs, specifically the C/01/10 and 29 sizes, for use in the Standedge and Huddersfield tunnels. These sections of the route presented complex engineering challenges due to their confined environments and critical operational importance. BCM GRC’s solution offered a practical and high-performance alternative to traditional materials, helping contractors meet demanding installation and safety requirements. The elevated cable troughs provided by BCM GRC Ltd. are notably lightweight – approximately 20 percent the weight of conventional precast concrete. This attribute greatly facilitated handling and installation, especially in restricted tunnel spaces where manual access and lifting constraints are common. Additionally, the product is non-combustible, achieving an A1 fire classification, which is essential for ensuring safety in enclosed and high-risk areas such as railway tunnels. By integrating BCM GRC’s cable troughs into the TRU works, contractors benefited from improved installation efficiency, reduced labour demands, and enhanced safety outcomes. The product’s durability and low maintenance profile also align with long-term infrastructure goals, supporting the TRU’s vision of a modern, resilient railway network. BCM GRC’s contribution underscores the value of innovative materials in delivering complex rail projects and highlights its commitment to supporting the future of UK rail.
